About this venue
The Merwin House was purchased in 1875 by William and Elizabeth Doane. The house was named Tranquility, as it was located across the Houstanic River in a peaceful setting. The house was built in 1900 and has been a popular choice for guests. The house was donated to the public in accordance with Vipont's will in 1965. The property was acquired by Historic New England in 1966 and converted into a house museum. The house is a collection of antiques, artifacts and souvenirs from world travel collected by the family prior to the late 19th Century.
