Daphne (opera)

Daphne is a one-act tragic opera in German by composer Richard Strauss. Subtitled as "A Bucolic Tragedy in One Act," Strauss' 13th opera is considered by many to be one of the more concise exhibitions of his unique style. The story is loosely based on a myth from Ovid's Metamorphoses about the tragic relationship between the Roman Sun-God Apollo and the young Daphne, whose love for nature outweighs her love of man. Since Strauss' work premiered in 1938, Daphne has generally been considered by critics and scholars alike to be the foremost representative of Strauss' late period.
