Roughly based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story brings the tragic tale of two star-crossed lover to 1950s New York where two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, compete for power on the streets of the city. Tension rises between the rival groups when Maria, the sister of the Sharks' gang leader, and Tony, a member of the Jets, meet at a dance hall and instantly fall in love. Since its Broadway debut in 1957, West Side Story has endured as one of the great musical classics of the 20th Century with a successful film version and numerous tours, remounts and lengthy runs on major stages.
