Bone to Pick & Diadem

San Francisco-based playwright Eugenie Chan wrote Bone to Pick and its companion piece Diadem as a contemporary re-imagining of the Greek myth of Ariadne. Performed first, Diadem places Ariadne in the myth original setting on the island of Naxos where Ariadne awaits the prince Theseus who has been sent to kill a cursed Minotaur. After Ariadne tells Theseus the secret to killing the Minotaur the two fall in love. Theseus successfully kills the Minotaur, but in his triumphant selfishness leaves Naxos with out Ariadne, forgetting her and thus their love. Following the performance of Diadem is Chan's postmodern take on Ariadne's fate where Ariadne is a diner waitress named Ria who, 3000 years after she is betrayed by "Theo," is now reconciling with her lost love.
