Based on a novel by C.Y. Lee, Rogers and Hammerstein broke ground in this 1957 musical with mostly Asian-American protagonists. The story focuses on a shy young girl, Mei Li, who has recently immigrated to San Francisco from China to enter into an arranged marriage with Sammy, a fast-paced club owner. Conflict ensues between new and old world as Mei Li tries to sort through the waters of dating and love in a foreign land. The show is a multiple Tony winner and was adapted into a successful 1961 film.
