Los Angeles' Bodies of Water makes the kind of Southern California chamber pop that conjures up the Beach Boys' California as much as it does David Lynch's more broken vision of the city. Pairing the wan cry of saxophone with the march of piano and drums as in the song "Rise Up Careful," 80s-era soft jazz engulfs the listener with cheap nostalgia, but pulses with a steadily rising beat. This song, like others in the band's catalog, treads a line between catchy, vintage melodies and more menacing atonal sounds that add significantly to the band's often complex song structures. Bodies of Water consists of two lead singers, a husband-wife duo, both of whom share vocal prominence that creates a choral, sing-a-long type atmosphere that has proven popular with audiences.
