Johannesburg, South Africa band BLK JKS considers itself an afro-futurist project, an important distinction from the many genres that could be associated with the group's music. Reclaiming the musical styles of afro-pop, jazz and dub, BLK JKS has a new vision of black music that speaks to a kind of youthful energy that isn't unique to the group's Johannesburg home but to genre-bending styles emerging around the world. Songs like "Molalatladi" feature prominent nods to afro-pop's familiar pop guitar riffs, along with horns that could easily be from New Orleans or Fela Kuti's inimitable band.
