When a couple of kids with a high affinity for glam rock started playing together in the late 1960s in an old decommissioned doll factory, they unknowingly laid the foundations for the protopunk band New York Dolls. Though the group never really broke into the mainstream, it is regarded by many serious music followers as a seminal band that has influenced countless other bands that have arisen in its wake. When playing live, the band's brand of sophisticated take-no-prisoners garage rock is exemplified perfectly though the group's intense performances that highlight lead singer David Johansen's flamboyant attitude and natural performance ability.
