The Gamecocks are the sports teams that compete for the school in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The name "Gamecock" is a moniker that pays respects to Thomas Sumter, a South Carolinian war hero who was given the nickname "The Carolina Gamecock" during the Revolutionary War for his impressive fighting tactics that didn't rely on his physicality or size of company.
