The University of Missouri--often affectionately referred to as Mizzou or MU--is a public research university located Columbia, Missouri. Since being founded in 1839, the school has done much to progress academia. The sports teams that play for the school are the Missouri Tigers and they play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I. The name comes from a group of armed militia men called the Missouri Tigers, who guarded Columbia from Confederate soldiers in 1864 during the Civil War.
