The comic ballet, La Fille Mal Gardée (known in English as The Wayward Daughter), has stood the test of time with numerous revivals and revisions since its premier in the late 18th century. Like many comic ballets of the era, La Fille Mal Gardée is traditionally comprised of popular songs and dances put together into a sort of patchwork performance known as a pastiche. Even though the ballet has not reached the universal popularity of the more grandiose productions in the ballet repertoire, it is considered by many to be one of modern ballet's oldest and most important works.
