Ali Sethi is a Pakistani-American artist recognized for his innovative fusion of South Asian classical and modern music. As the son of prominent journalists Najam Sethi and Jugnu Mohsin, he gained literary acclaim with his novel The Wish Maker (2009), which delves into themes of generational identity within Pakistan. Transitioning from a focus on economics to South Asian Studies at Harvard University, Sethi honed his classical music skills under the tutelage of Ustad Naseeruddin Saami and Farida Khanum. His significant career milestone occurred in 2015 with the release of “Umraan Langiyaan” on Coke Studio Pakistan, followed by international success with his 2022 single “Pasoori,” which became the first Pakistani track to reach the top of Spotify’s Global Viral chart. Sethi is celebrated for his efforts to bridge cultural gaps, performing worldwide and promoting unity among South Asian traditions. His candidness regarding his identity, alongside his partner Salman Toor, has fostered greater LGBTQ+ representation in South Asian art, infusing his music with themes of resilience and self-acceptance.
