The Carolina Hurricanes are a National Hockey League team, based in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Hurricanes were founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association. In 1979, the Whalers joined the NHL as part of the NHL-WHA merger. They played in Hartford until the 1997 season, when they relocated to Raleigh.
