Ketama is a groundbreaking Spanish musical ensemble recognized for its unique integration of traditional flamenco with a variety of genres, including salsa, jazz, funk, and reggae, resulting in a distinctive fusion sound. Established in Madrid during the early 1980s, the original members comprised José Soto Sorderita, Juan Carmona, and Ray Heredia, all hailing from notable flamenco lineages. Following Heredia's exit, Antonio Carmona assumed the role of lead vocalist, thereby solidifying the group's renowned trio. Ketama's innovative musical style elicited both admiration and criticism, particularly from flamenco traditionalists; however, they achieved international recognition with albums such as Songhai (1988) and the live recording De akí a Ketama (1995), which enjoyed significant success in Spain. Their 2002 release, Dame la Mano, incorporated elements of hip-hop and house music, further expanding the horizons of their fusion style. After two decades of musical exploration, Ketama disbanded in 2004, leaving an enduring influence on both the flamenco and world music landscapes.
