On the far northern coast of Spain, football fans in the autonomous community of Asturias follow Real Sporting de Gijón. The team was established in 1905 and in 1944 it entered La Liga for the first time. It has never won a league title, though the team nearly did so in 1978-79 when they finished four points behind Real Madrid. Gijón has participated in six UEFA Cup Championships and the team also plays in Spain’s oldest stadium, El Molinón, in use since 1908 albeit with modern and contemporaneous updates. It has a capacity of 30,000, but crowds of 40,000 or more are not uncommon, depending on the match.
