Gangwon FC became the 14th professional football club competing in K-League in 2008. Because Gangwon province was once the sole province which did not have a professional football club until the establishment of the club, the inhabitants of the province gave fervent supports, which the team could have sensational first season in 2009. However, the fledgling team have been struggling to get out of the low ranks of the league, worrying about the relegation to the lower league.
