Based in Barcelos Gil Vicente Futebol Clube competes at the highest level of Portuguese football. The team was founded in 1924 and played in the bottom tiers of the football league pyramid. It was quick to develop and in 1990 secured promotion into the First Division. While it struggled for form in its first few seasons, it was quick to adapt to the pace of the league and established itself as one regulars.
