About

Los Cachorros de Juan Villarreal is a norteño music ensemble from Mexico, established in 1962 in Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas. The group was formed when accordionist Juan Villarreal and his brother, bassist José María Villarreal, began their performances in local cantinas. Their significant breakthrough occurred when the esteemed accordionist Mario Montes invited them to record their debut album. Originally known as Los Hermanos Villarreal, the band adopted the name Los Cachorros de Juan Villarreal after the untimely death of José María in 1972. Under the guidance of Juan, the ensemble has flourished, producing over 54 albums and contributing to the soundtracks of 11 films. Their well-known tracks include "Sabiendo quien era yo" and "Se les pelo Baltazar," reflecting Juan Villarreal's remarkable songwriting talent, with more than 321 registered compositions. Presently, the band comprises Juan Villarreal and other skilled musicians, preserving their legacy within the norteño genre through notable albums such as Open Bottles and Stars and Diamonds.
