Written by the intellectual titan Anton Chekhov in just ten days, this four-piece act features Nikolai Ivanov, a lovelorn and hapless character that finds himself torn between his finances, his marriage and his mistress. The plot centers on Ivanov, who is married to Anna, a sick woman dying of tuberculosis while at the same time he becomes enamored with his friend's daughter, Sasha. When Anna dies, he tries to marry Sasha and at the wedding, Lvov, Anna's former doctor declares to the audience that Ivanov is a cheater and liar for his betrayal of not revealing Anna's diagnosis as well as his covetous need for Sasha's dowry. The play ends with Ivanov finally releasing himself from the ignominy and agony in a violent and disturbing denouement.
