I Was Looking At The Ceiling And Then I Saw The Sky is a musical composed by John Adams with a libretto by June Jordan. Often called a "song play," for Adam's minimalist style, the story begins in the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Following the journeys of seven young adults from various social backgrounds and ethnic heritages, the production examines different privileges and disadvantages of Americans against the backdrop of a devastating and humanizing natural disaster.
