Roberto Devereux is a tragic opera loosely based on the life and times of Robert Devereux, the 2nd Earl of Essex and an influential member of the court of Queen Elizabeth I of England. It was first performed in 1837 in Naples, Italy and after the opera's success, it was performed in a number of cities throughout Europe including Paris, London and Rome.
