The Hairy Ape is a stage drama that follows Yank, a brutish ship laborer who prides himself on being the strongest stoker on his ship. His high sense of self falters when the daughter of a rich steel tycoon calls him a "filthy beast," and he undergoes an extreme identity crisis. Yank leaves the ship and wanders into New York City, only to find that he neither fits in with the high society of Manhattan nor the awakened labor organizers who occupy the waterfront.
