As One is an opera that tells the story of a transgender person who is deemed freakish by society. Premiering at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2014, the story is based on the life of respected filmmaker Kimberly Reed. With two singers, a baritone and a mezzo-soprano, portraying the main transgender character, As One manages to tell a powerful story about the importance of knowing who you truly are and having the power to ignore your critics.
