Régine Zylberberg is a singer-songwriter whose career in singing and club management in the mid-20th century spawned the modern day discotheque and DJ culture. Born in Belgium, she spent much of her childhood in hiding in France during the Nazi occupation and ended up staying after the war and making a name for herself in the nightclub scene as both a manager and a singer. Often credited for the invention of the discotheque, she created a new club atmosphere at Paris's Whisky a Gogo by replacing jukeboxes with linked turntables run by disc jockeys who could choose their own music and take requests from the audience. The self-proclaimed Queen of the Night, she continues to command stages around Europe.
