Renamed The Testament of Mary for a 2013 Broadway run and based on a novella of the same name, Testament is a stage production by Colm Toibin that offers an alternative narrative to perhaps the most famous of Biblical stories. Originally written as a monologue, but adapted into other forms since, the production offers Mary's point of view after the murder of her son Jesus. Neither anti- or pro-religion, the play humanizes The Virgin Mary, making her first and foremost a mother who is grieving and making sense of the untimely death of her child.
