About

Matuto is the musical project of Clay Ross, a South Carolina native and New York resident who blends his jazz and Brazilian folk studies with his Southern roots. Along with his backing band, he crafts a distinct amalgam of Appalachian fiddle, Brazilian Carnaval rhythms, bluesy vocals, jazz improvisation and the electric twang of a guitar. Taking its name from the Brazilian slang for country bumpkin, Matuto released its self-titled debut album in 2011, followed by 2013's The Devil and the Diamond.
