William Close and the Earth Harp

The earth harp is a stringed instrument with some strings extending as long as 1000 feet. The first earth harp was invented and created by William Close in 1999. Because of the dimensions of the instrument, the architecture and geographical setting where it is played is almost just as responsible for its sound as its player is. Creating eerie sounding, ambient sound with his instrument, William Close has performed in multiple instillations around the world including the Grand Theater of Shanghai and the Space Needle in Seattle.
