About
Hailing from Morocco, Master Musicians of Jajouka is a collective of sufi trance musicians that is renowned for its influence on Western artists. Distinctive to its village of Jajouka, the group's droning, highly improvised music features complex rhythms and a flute known as an lira that is widely considered the oldest instrument of the region. Since the band's introduction to Western audiences through their work with the Beat Generation's Brion Gysin and William S. Borroughs in the 1950s, to their connection to Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, Master Musicians of Jajouka has maintained an air of mystery that, hand in hand with its narcotic North African music, has cultivated an international audience.
