The Beauty Queen of Leenane is black comedy written by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh that was premiered by the Druid Theater Company in Galway, Irland in 1996. A unique blend of black comedy, tragedy, stark melodrama and psychological horror, the story is set in the village of Leenane, Ireland during the early 1990s. Taking place entirely inside of an ill lit kitchen, providing a prevalent sense of entrapment, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the story of a mentally ill 40 year old named Maureen Folan who lives with her manipulative and sardonic 70 year old mother.
