The Miser is one of the most popular comedies by the French playwright Molière. First performed in 1668, it tells the story of a wealthy old widower named Harpagon, who aims to marry a beautiful but impoverished woman, who actually is in love with his son. Meanwhile, he plans to marry his daughter off to a rich man, but she is attracted to a steward. To complicate the story further, Harpagon's one true love, his money, ends up being stolen. Tackling the all-important themes of love and money, The Miser has inspired a variety of movies and TV adaptations.
