Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, who performs and releases music as Chuck D, is a hip-hop singer/songwriter, rapper and producer who is probably best known as the leader of the popular 1980s conscious hip-hop group Public Enemy. Hailing from New York City, Public Enemy would release its debut album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, in 1987 and continued to release a number of well-received LPs over the course of the next few years. While still an active member of Public Enemy, Chuck D launched his solo career with his 1996 debut album, Autobiography of Mistachuck.
