Tabla maestros, Ustad Alla Rakha Khan and his son Ustad Zakhir Hussain have passed on their treasure trove of musical knowledge to many students. But Anuradha Pal's name remains distinct as she is known as the first female tabla player. Her deft hands have created rhythms that have mesmerized a varied audience in India and international music festivals. Though she belongs to the Hindustani genre, her women-only band of musicians, Stree Shakti, mixes Carnatic and Hindustani music, while her other band, Recharge, is known for its Indo-jazz fusion. The winner of multiple awards and prestigious international titles, Anuradha is an inspirational icon for Indian women.
