The Horse Flies

Originally founded in the late 1970s as Tompkins County Horseflies, The Horse Flies is an alternative folk rock band that merges a post punk sensibility with old-time music. After releasing a split album with the Chicken Chokers in 1985, the band dropped its full-length debut Human Fly, in 1987. Despite never breaking into a mainstream audience, The Horse Flies developed a dedicated fan base throughout the late 1980s and 1990s with its distinctive Appalachian and modern art rock imagery. With founding husband-wife pair Jeff Claus and Judy Hyman still at the helm, the band continues to release records, including 2008's Until the Ocean, filled with fiddle-infused alternative rock.
