Suphala learnt her first instrument, piano, at the tender age of four. Back home in Minneapolis, she grew up to the sounds of Western music and Indian classical music. But her inclination to tabla grew stronger as she frequented Indian classical music events. Her perspective towards Indian music and culture broadened as she sought training under the late maestro Ustad Alla Rakha Khan and his eminent son Ustad Zakhir Hussain. She honed her musical talent and released her first album, Instru Mental in 2000. She caught the world's attention as she was the first female musician to perform in Afghanistan post-Taliban regime. Her other two albums are collaborations with the likes of Norah Jones and Sean Lennon, creating a different genre of music that has appealed to music lovers and critics.
