Koodiyattam is an exquisite dance form of Kerala (Southern India) that dates back to over 2000 years. This art form is parallel to Kathakali (a popular dance of Kerala) as both have elaborately-dressed dancers performing a mime and dance act to the beats of traditional instruments. But as the latter dance gained faster recognition, Koodiyattam was practiced by very few due to its traditional restrictions. In 1980s, the famous Koodiyattam artists, Moozhikulam Kochukuttan Chakyar and Ammannur Madhava Chakyar dedicated a center to this elusive art form. And now Margi Madhu, the successor of this famous lineage, continues to promote Koodiyattam through his traditional yet contemporary perspective of art. Besides his shows in India, Madhu has left the audience awe-struck with his performances at Kennedy Center, Washington D.C and other international festivals.
