In the holy place of Sikhs, two brothers - Puranchand Wadali, a wrestler and Pyarelal Wadali, an artist of the village folk theater - left behind their humble occupation to devote themselves to music. As they belonged to a musical background, it was easy to gain training in Sufi and qawwali music under the guidance of the famous Patiala Gharana artist, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Saheb of and Pandit Durga Das. Just the right amount of persuasion and direction by their father, followed by their first act in Jallandhar's Harballabh Temple, channelized their exceptional talents. Though the nationwide fame, Padma Shri title and Sangeet Natak Akademi award fail to detach these artists from their roots and their belief of music being non-commercial and entirely spiritual experience. Even today they strive to spread music by teaching aspiring students free of cost. Indeed, their powerful voices tinged with Punjabi folk and sufi rhythms is a delight every discerning audience.
