Proof that meeting people via Craiglist isn't always a bad idea, Freelance Whales formed in Brooklyn in 2008 thanks to a series of ads put out by front man Judah Dadone. After consistently playing shows on subway platforms around New York, the band self-released a debut album in 2009 that caught the attention of French Kiss and Mom + Pop Records, who both signed the band and re-released its record. Producing indie chamber-pop with hints of folk in the Sufjan Stevens vein, Freelance Whales has received a good amount of positive press and continues to rise on the indie music radar.
