The side project of husband-wife team Tine Weymouth and Christ Frantz, members of The Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club was formed in '81 at a dancehall of the same title in the Bahamas while the Heads were on a break. The duo enjoyed the most success in the early '80s in US and UK dance clubs with new wave hits--many of its singles of the period were sampled by hip hop and electronica artists in more recent years. As its US popularity declined slightly, the band attempted to change its sound to fit more in the techno scene of the '90s, but with little success. While Tom Tom Club has never received the same amount of acclaim since its early days, the band still makes enjoyable music and is a fun live act.
