The Membranes was formed in 1977 during a propitious time when music styles were popular enough to foster interesting bands that were interested in pushing the boundaries of rock and roll. Hailing from Blackpool, England, the group pioneered various forms of avant-garde noise rock that would later rise to the forefront of the American indie music culture with bands like Sonic Youth and Big Black.
