Norwegian born saxophonist Jan Garbarek was noticed as an aficionado at an early age, winning jazz competitions starting at 15. Working with other notable jazz leaders in the 60s, Garbarek honed his sound to the style he is famous for today, a sparse and surprising use of space with haunting arrangements. After establishing himself as a jazz musician in his own right, Garbarek was signed to ECM records and became a leader for many ensembles. His most famous collaboration was one with the Hilliard Ensemble in the early 90s and which he still often tours with today.
