Ultramagnetic MCs is a Bronx, New York-based hip-hop collective that was founded in the mid-1980s by Kool Keith. The group rose to recognition in 1986 with the release of its single "Ego Trippin," on Next Plateau Records, before dropping its seminal debut album, Critical Breakdown, in 1988. Now considered a new school classic, the record pioneered several new sampling techniques that helped introduce what is commonly referred to as the golden era of sampling. After its follow-up albums failed to garner the same kind of attention, Ultramagnetic MCs split up, only to reunite in 2007 to produce the studio album The Best Kept Secret.
