With a sound it describes as "folk-step," Alt-J is an alternative pop/rock band that weaves both electronic music and folk into one cohesive sonic tapestry. Formed in 2007 when members Joe Newman, Gus Unger-Hamilton and Thom Green were still students at Leeds University, the band cultivated a sonic amalgam of snappy guitars, understated sampling and tight harmonies for its debut album, An Awesome Wave, which was released in 2012.
