My Friend The Chocolate Cake is an Australian music group that creates a fusion of ambient and world music with influences ranging from Celtic folk to experimental rock. David Bridie and Helen Mountfort founded the project in 1989 while still members of the acclaimed rock band Not Drowning, Waving. With the intention of using My Friend The Chocolate Cake as an acoustic music outlet, the two musicians added a violinist, mondonlinist and guitarist to the ensemble, adding several layers of acoustic texture of its sound. My Friend The Chocolate Cake attracted immediate attention for its barrier breaking sound and received the ARIA Music Award for Best Adult Contemporary Album for two of its back-to-back albums, 1994's Brood and 1996's Good Luck. The group has developed its sound to include acoustic pop elements but it remains rooted in the expansive realm of ambient and atmospheric music.
