Virtus Roma, officially called Pallacanestro Virtus Roma, is an Italian basketball club based in the national capital Rome. It was formed in 1960 as the result of a merger between San Saba and Gruppo Borgo Cavalleggeri, and adopted its current name in 1972 after merging with GS Banco di Roma. It first rose to prominence in 1978 and its entry into the top flight two years later marked the beginning of a highly successful period. During this phase, it made a name for itself as one of the strongest teams in the continent, and took home the European Champions Cup (now called EuroLeague) and FIBA Korać Cup. Following a bad patch, it was relegated to the second division in 2015. The club plays its home fixtures at the PalaLottomatica.
