When fledgling bands first start playing gigs, it can be a humbling and oftentimes humiliating experience. Some groups pay to play at venues, others play for free, some play at community festivals, and others at battle of the bands competitions. The English post-hardcore group Brigade got its start by winning a battle of the bands and though it might be slightly embarrassing for the group to admit today, this was obviously the catalyst for the ensuing moderate success.
