Udu earned a biology degree from Spelman College and a master’s in medical informatics from Dartmouth College. Her stage name, created with a random name generator, adds an "e" to "Hemlock" in tribute to Lorde. Influenced by EDM artists like Avicii and K-pop, her music blends lo-fi and indie pop, earning comparisons to Grimes and praise from Pitchfork. Her debut single, "Gimme All Ur Luv," released on May 24, 2022, garnered over a million Spotify streams and acclaim from Complex. Follow-up singles "Girlfriend" and "Stranger Danger!" also surpassed a million streams.
