About
Written by Bernard Shaw in 1893, this is a frank and revealing look at prostitution and its role in society. Mrs Warren's daughter finds out that her mother built the family fortune on prostitution. Disgusted, appalled and aghast, Mrs Warren's daughter eventually brings herself to forgive her mother. Only after she has made peace with her mother's past does she discover that Mrs Warren still presently dabbles in the old family business. Mrs Warren tries to make her daughter understand how and why she was driven to go into such a profession. The play is a powerful vehicle for an examination of women in Victorian society.
