Bluebrain

Bluebrain is a music duo based in Washington, D.C. made up of brothers Hays and Ryan Holladay. Since the brothers paired up in 2009, Bluebrain has earned a reputation for creating imaginative projects in its local area and for working with public institutions such as the Smithsonian, Corcoran and Philips Collection. Bluebrain began a cutting edge series of location-aware albums, beginning with the duo's 2010 release The National Mall, which are site-specific works of music designed to be experienced within the a certain boundary. The music depends on and responds to the location of the listener within the designated area. Bluebrain released its second album in the series Central Park ("Listen To The Light"), designed for the New York based park of the same name, in 2011. The series is powered by tracking the user's location via GPS systems in iPhones, which react with hundreds of zones within the area that have been tagged to alter the sound of the music based on the listener's proximity, so the melodies, rhythms, pace and instrumentation vary for every different path a listener can take. The albums are available for download as an iPhone application.
