Karate was rock fusion band from Boston that was known for its peculiar incorporation of indie rock, blues and jazz. Founders Geoff Farina, Eamonn Vitt and Gavi McCarthy formed the band in 1993, influenced by classic rock and the punk scene of their youths. The trio became a four-piece band in 1995 when it added bassist Jeff Goddard to its lineup. Although Karate's career was cut short when Farina developed hearing problems, the band left a legacy of six albums, the most successful of which was the band's 1997 sophomore album, In Place of Real Insight. Karate played its final show in 2005 and eventually released a live recording of the show in 2007, titled 595 after the number of shows the band performed during its twelve year run.
