Stephen Jeffreys' adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel is an intimate look at social class structures of Victorian England. This is a character driven narrative headed by Thomas Gradgrind, a no-nonsense type of man who holds disdain for anything imaginative, frivolous or fanciful. At the other end of the spectrum are the Gradgrind household servants and circus folk who represent childhood joy and imagination. Caught in the middle is Louisa Gradgrind, Gradgrind's oldest daughter who feels obligated to marry Mr, Bounderby even though she does not love him, just so she can please her father.
